Rumors have a way of spreading. Many of them are false, especially where the town’s sheriff and outsiders are concerned. Someone saw a handsome Paldean ranger, looked to the person next to them, and said Woah, I think that guy’s a champion rank trainer. While Navy and the newcomer did a boring routine of work, just rounding up some stray Pokemon displaced by the recent troubles, half of his town talked themselves into the two having an exhibition match.[break][break]
That’s how he comes to stand opposite silverio delfino on a seaside battle pitch, just outside his old gym. Everyone’s excited, and for that he is thankful. With so much strife across this war-torn region, Navy is thankful to this stranger for providing everyone a distraction. It will not bring back the dead, nor will it make reconstruction go any quicker, but it will give them a tale to tell each other.[break][break]
“Alright, Silverio. You mind if I call you Silver?” He smiles, remembering a trainer from an old movie with that name. “How’s a one on one match sound to you? I’ll be using this guy.” The crowd parts to allow a silent machine to pass. Roland is what scientists call an Iron Valiant. Though his machine soldier is valiant, he much prefers Roland.[break][break]

Chrome contrasts with paint splattered across his body. Roland’s colors affect the image of a Gardevoir undergoing mega evolution. The colors were the machine’s choice, a homage to a brother lost in a hellish place. With the one arm left to him, the iron knight draws his sword and holds it out, ready to face whatever creature Silverio throws out.

"just 'silv' is fine..."

it seemed that a certain trainer from paldea has a way of drawing attention unto himself. whether it was intentional or inadvertent, oftentimes it mattered little to him. but today on the other hand? having this many eyes on him was frankly unwanted, nor did he believe them to be warranted in any way. surely those eyes would be better off watching a smeargle sketch a mural of some kind. with word spreading like wildfire these days, it could be suffice to say that there may not have been many folk who hadn't already heard the speculations of a foreign champion coming to a city near them.

but silverio is not what he once was, that being one of the small few pokémon trainers who had gained the pleasure and privilege to call themselves a champion. or at the very least, that's what he had grown to be back in his tenaciously rigorous homeland of paldea. here in hoenn, however, he's a complete stranger to most - and dare we say, practically a nobody. so what was all the hustle-and-bustle going on all around him? or perhaps a better question would be this: how has he managed to come to this point in time?

suppose that his backstory as a competitive battler may be common knowledge to the rest of the league, not that it would affect his take on how other hoenn inhabitants may view the ranger or anything. still, there always seems to be at least one person out here in this region that sought to test his mettle. and today, that someone was the greatly-renowned sheriff of dewford. like many other oppositions here in this land of which there was still much to learn about, silv meets the challenge head-on.

"one of those, huh...?"

the one chosen to battle from the sheriff's corner was a being unbeknownst to many, and one possessing a striking resemblance to a popular psychic pokémon of the present. paldean tales have told of such creatures like this one. alas, silv would treat it as any other entity - an adversary, despite missing a limb. from behind the paldean, a knight of another variety entirely had emerged, one who bore malicoiusly dark armor, arms in the shapes of longswords, and a blistering cerulean flame atop his head.

"one on one...all good with me." silv turns to his pokémon, one who would aim to prove to be valiant in his own right. "whaddya think, buddy? you sure you're up for this?" the ceruledge crossed his own swords, as if to say he was ready for what may be his toughest challenge yet.

Roland stands unblinking on his side of the pitch. Other Iron Valiants favor a double-sided blade, but not he. His has but one blade, and its edge is razor sharp. Upon hearing the words exchanged by the other human and his liege lord, the blade is drawn and held in a fencer’s salute. This region demands much of those who would be here. Whether he faces a black knight or a white knight, a knight is still a knight. A knight protects.[break][break]
Only when he moves forward does he seem to be more than a statue, some macabre postmodern art piece. His movements are smooth in a way only a machine could be smooth, liquid, water flowing upon the river. Electricity sparks from his core, the engine inside whirring to life.[break][break]
“Looks like Roland’s raring to go!” Calls Navy, still smiling. “Get your quark drive going.” It must seem a strange command, though Roland obeys at once. Sparks turn to a thunderstorm as the electricity building within him spreads out, making the hairs of bystanders stand on end. Static electricity surges through the field. They fight within an electric terrain.[break][break]
It leaves him exposed, as it takes singular concentration to set the field properly. Setting it wrong will harm others, and he has sworn to protect these folk. All he can do is wait and see what his foe will do.[break][break]
“They have guys like Roland in Paldea, Silv?” Were it not for Paldea having its own Area Zero, it would seem a foolish question. Hoenn’s version of the place spawns paradox Pokemon daily. Perhaps Paldea’s is the same, and that is why they guard that place so closely.

there is a lot to consider here: the capabilities of this futuristic mechanism, the impact of its seemingly immeasurable power, and the odds of surviving a confrontation with it - especially when the opposition would be doomed to engage within the confines of a field can be said to feel like home to the ironclad gladiator. alas, as a battler himself, silverio can accurately analyze this tactic as a means for the iron valiant to give itself a quick jump-start. or rather, that's what rumors have told throughout the years.

a well-oiled machine, powered by a spark plug generated by its own supercells.

quite a threat, indeed, but the paldean's visage remains stilled. unfazed, azure irises locked-on dead ahead. this is a tactic he has seen used by various trainers in the past, but none had utilized it in any way similar to how the sheriff's super-robot is commanding it here. given his past experiences as a competitor, silv deduces that he and his dark knight will playing this game with a disadvantage from the get-go, and quite possibly, until its eventual climax as well.

and yet he and ceruledge stood unharmed...for now...

they wait until the stage is set so that their performance may commence without a hitch, as the ranger is asked about his homeland. particularly, if there were other beings like the one belonging to the sheriff. silv's eyes drift downward towards the sparks flying beneath him, then up again, offering a nod to confirm navy's presumption. "yeah they do..." he begins, his attention then drawn towards his own knight that dons malicious armor, and back to the opposing trainer once more.

"a space, or perhaps a time, secluded from the rest of our existence is what houses these entities. or at least that's what they say, according to legends...yours seems...different, somehow..."

and he is not, by any means, alluding to its missing limb...

regardless, the ceruledge stands firm. at the ready, by his commander's orders.

“Mmm…” He does not notice it when his hand runs along the sole white streak in his beard. The streak is stark white, not faded gray as so often comes with age. There are other worlds than this one, and they demand a tole upon the body when you walk the roads between.[break][break]
“Guess that explains why they lock up Area Zero like that gold fort in Unova.” Navy looks from Silv to Roland, who stands there perplexed by his opponent. Roland is an efficient being, and some part of him cannot comprehend why the dark knight did not press the opening presented by the setting of the terrain.[break][break]
“Come on, Roland. Don’t keep Silv waiting.” The iron warrior raises his blade, skirting in a zig-zag lightning streak towards the Ceruledge. His footwork is the practiced work of pistons, pumping oil across the circuits, cogs, and springs. He moves with speed that most living things could only dream of having. When Roland arrives before the knight, his blade starts high and cuts low from left to right, a downward, wide spirit break overflowing with fae energy.

while he had never gotten an opportunity - or consent, rather - to venture into area zero himself, stories of what it once was had been told in paldea throughout time immemorial. such tales have become something of a second nature to silverio, to a point where they'd grown to evolve into something akin to a belief that may be deemed sacrilegious to some. nonetheless, it was a belief that he'd come to live by, an imagination, a vision even, that there truly are worlds out there other than this world. if that is likely the case, then he just hasn't seen anything of that nature.[break][break]

not yet, anyway.[break][break]

through the said beliefs of his trainer, ceruledge stands firm despite the change in scenery - electricity filling the air around them. and as quickly as the environment shifted, the menacing machine makes its move at speeds comparable to a fighter jet, as if the electric terrain is providing a sparkplug for the opposition.[break][break]

or maybe...that's exactly what it's for...!?[break][break]

the dark knight dares to take a step forward to meet his adversary head-on, but due to its unfathomably swift motions, ceruledge is quickly approached by the iron warrior. moving its sharp-edged arms to challenge the machine's initial attack, it clashes. and yet, it fails to match his opponent's fast pace. a downward slash strikes true, knocking the ghostly gladiator back a tad, it's armored head somehow retaining its posture all the while.[break][break]

"damn, it's fast..." silv alludes with a soft voice drifting, to no one in particular.[break][break]

"it's alright, buddy! just keep your head up and push forward!" the hard-edged soldier cocks his head in acknowledgement of his partner's words. if there's little or no chance to match roland's speed, then maybe there's a chance to challenge it's strength. with that in mind, ceruledge presses forward, bladed arms swiping across; a slash to the left, then to the right, then left once more, heat on the blades intensifying as he does so. his bitter blade seeks to find its mark.

Sparks fly when Roland and Ceruledge’s swords meet. Ghastly blues contrast with fey pink. A dazzling light show plays for the audience. Those gathered to watch the match gasp as the beauty of it all. Watching two professional level trainers fight is hardly a novel experience, but true pros vex their audience as easily as they breathe.[break][break]
Subtle whines in Roland’s circuits are drowned out by the crowd and the sound of metal on metal. Though he turns every blow aside enough to avoid harm, he is powerless to stop the bitter blade’s draining effect. His own life energy, if machines can even have such a thing, is sapped, blow by blow.[break][break]
This battle has only begun. Roland whirrs, searching for an opening. What strength this black knight brings to bear. Finally, he finds his moment. Behind him, his liege lord plays his part. Where most Pokemon listen intently for a command, Roland knows Navy puts his gift for words to use in other ways.[break][break]
“We could go to Hoenn’s Area Zero sometime, if you want. Hoenn’s rangers have a few stations down there and I help out. Who knows, maybe you could catch your own Roland.”[break][break]
Roland’s blade thrums with lightning. Slipping it under the bitter blade, he tries to bring it against the Ceruledge before the energy explodes with the energy of a thunderbolt.
